According to recent information, drivers could face a hefty £1000 fine if their vehicles are not kept clean and tidy. This alarming revelation has prompted car cleaning buyer Jamie Louram, who works at Halfords, to stress the importance of maintaining a clean car for safety reasons.
Louram strongly emphasized the need for drivers to keep their footwells and dashboard clear, ensuring an unobstructed view through the windshield. He also highlighted the significance of having sparkling clean mirrors, as drivers can be fined for having dirty windscreens, windows, or wing mirrors.
"Any kind of dirt or grime on the windscreen can be incredibly dangerous as it can impact your view of the road ahead," Louram warned. "In some instances, having a dirty windscreen could be seen as careless drivingand land motorists with a fine of up to £100 and points on the license if an accident occurs as a result." The presence of debris on the car floor was also highlighted as a safety hazard. Louram explained that loose items can become lodged under the pedals, impeding proper braking functionality.
“„As a general rule, keep your car clutter-free to avoid any dangerous situations such as things getting stuck under the brake pedal or blocking your view- Jamie Louram
To combat this issue, Louram recommended using a car bin to help maintain a tidy interior. He also suggested carrying a pack of wipes to clean spills and dirty hands, ensuring enhanced cleanliness of interior surfaces.
In addition to the safety concerns, there are legal implications for neglecting car cleanliness. Regulation 30 of The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations of 1986 states that all glass and transparent material on a motor vehicle must be maintained in a condition that does not obscure the driver's vision while driving on the road. Furthermore, The Highway Code explicitly states that windscreens, windows, and car registration plates must be kept clean and free from obstructions to vision.
The significance of a clean car exterior, particularly in relation to the visibility of the number plate, was highlighted by a spokesperson from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).
“„There is a specific offence under the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 of obscuring or allowing a registration mark to be not easily distinguishable- Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) Spokesperson
This means that if the outside of the car is excessively dirty and hinders the visibility of the number plate, drivers could face a substantial fine.
The warning about messy cars serves as a reminder to all motorists to prioritize cleanliness and tidiness in their vehicles. Not only does it contribute to road safety by ensuring clear visibility, but it also helps drivers comply with the law and avoid potential legal penalties. Therefore, it is crucial for every car owner to regularly clean and organize their vehicle's interior and exterior to maintain a safe and legal driving environment.
