Early Life of Tom Brady

Brady was born and raised in San Mateo, California, which is just south of San Francisco. As a child of the Bay Area, Brady grew up a fan of the San Francisco 49ers and an admirer of the great Joe Montana. In fact, at age four, Brady was in attendance at the famous 1981 NFC Championship Game between the 49ers and Cowboys that ended with Montana’s pass to Dwight Clark that’s known as “The Catch.”
In high school, Brady was a three-sport star, playing baseball and basketball in addition to football. He was such a highly regarded baseball player in high school that theMontreal Expos drafted him in the 18th round of the 1995 MLB Draft. However, Brady also had interest from several prominent college football programs after starting for his high school’s varsity team since his junior year. Despite the Expos offering him a lucrative signing bonus to sign with them and begin a pro baseball career, Brady chose to pursue football, attending the University of Michigan.

Career of Tom Brady

When Brady arrived at Michigan, he was the seventh quarterback on the depth chart. He redshirted his first year and then attempted just 20 total passes over the next two seasons while serving in a backup role. But Brady would eventually rise to the top of the depth chart, starting every game for Michigan during the 1998 and 1999 seasons. The Wolverines were 20-5 across those two seasons, winning a share of the Big Ten title in 1998. Over those two years, Brady threw for over 4,600 yards with 30 touchdown passes and 16 interceptions.
Despite playing two seasons as a starter at Michigan, most NFL teams showed minimal amounts of interest in Brady. He was ignored until the New EnglandPatriots drafted him with the 199th pick in the 2000 NFL Draft. As a rookie, Brady threw just three passes while backing up Drew Bledsoe. However, in Week 2 of the 2001 season, Bledsoe suffered an injury, forcing Brady into action. The rest is history.
Brady started the final 14 games of the 2001 season for the Patriots, throwing just 18 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. But it was enough to lead the Patriots to an 11-5 record and an AFC East title. After tight playoff wins over the Raiders and Steelers, the Patriots met the Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI. Brady won Super Bowl MVP honors in the game after leading the Patriots on a drive late in the game that resulted in the game-winning field goal.
For most of the next two decades, Brady helped the Patriots become arguably the best dynasty in NFL history. Between 2001 and 2019, Brady led the Patriots to 17 AFC east titles, nine Super Bowl appearances, and six Super Bowl victories. In four of those six Super Bowl wins, Brady was also named Super Bowl MVP. He also took home league MVP honors in 2007, 2010, and 2017.
In 2020, Brady became a free agent and signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Without him, the Patriots suffered a swift downfall, experiencing their first losing season since 2000 before Brady became the starter. TheNFL betting worldhas quickly soured on the Patriots as a perennial contender, making it clear that it was Brady and not head coach Bill Belichick who was the drivingforce behind New England’s dynasty.
Meanwhile, Brady immediately led the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl victory in his first season with the team. It was Brady’s seventh Super Bowl ring and his fifth Super Bowl MVP. Behind Brady, the Buccaneers would go on to win division titles in 2021 and 2022. After three seasons in Tampa, Brady retired after the 2022 season, meaning he will be eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2028.
