O'Connor joined the Merchant Marines after receiving his high school diploma in 1942 and began working on ships in the Atlantic. His true passion was the theater; thus, this employment was only a temporary one.
Although his siblings became physicians, he chose to pursue literature and acting. While finishing his undergraduate studies at the National University of Ireland, he met his wife. They were married in Dublin in 1951, and he went on to star on stages around Europe before breaking into the movies.
Norman Lear approached O'Connor with the pilot script for "All in the Family," an American adaptation of the British series "'Til Death Do Us Part," in the early months of 1970.
At first, O'Connor didn't like the script, so Lear changed it to get him to agree to play "Archie." After some trouble getting it on the air because of its content, it finally made its debut on CBS on January 12, 1971.
For its day, "All in the Family" was a groundbreaking television program. It addressed hot-button issues that had never been covered on American television. In reality, it was the first to feature a flushing toilet, one of the numerous taboos of that age.
The sitcom paired the character of Archie against his "dingbat" but smart wife Edith (played by Jean Stapleton), their daughter Gloria (Sally Struthers), who was caught between her father's and her husband's ideas.
Despite receiving harsh criticism when it first debuted, "All in the Family" gained a sizable viewership, held the No. 1 spot for five years, and spawned three successful shows: "Archie Bunker's Place," "Maude," and "The Jeffersons."
The final episode of "All in the Family" aired in 1979, and Archie and Edith's chairs were donated to the Smithsonian for the Museum of Television and Radio.
