The original Airplane!, the ultimate cinematic spoof that inspired an entire genre of parody films, remains one of the brightest comedy gems of the '80s, if not of cinema itself.
"Airplane!" is a comedy in the grand tradition of high school sketches, the Sid Caesar TV program, Mad magazine, and the dog-eared screenplays that people's nephews write in lieu of college graduation. It's moronic, obvious, predictable, cheesy, and frequently hilarious. And it's often humorous because it's sophomoric, predictable, corny, and so on.

Airplane Movie (1980)

Released in 1980, "Airplane!" is a classic comedy film that parodies the disaster movie genre. Directed by Jim Abrahams and the Zucker brothers, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker, the film quickly became a cultural phenomenon for its irreverent humor and clever spoofs. "Airplane!" is renowned for its rapid-fire jokes, visual gags, and hilarious one-liners, making it one of the most beloved comedies of all time.
The film follows the story of Ted Striker, played by Robert Hays, a former pilot traumatized by his experiences in the war. Determined to win back his ex-girlfriend Elaine Dickinson, portrayed by Julie Hagerty, who is now a flight attendant, Ted boards a commercial airliner. However, when food poisoning strikes the crew and passengers, Ted must overcome his fear of flying to help navigate the plane to safety.
"Airplane!" is famous for its absurd and slapstick comedy. The film utilizes puns, sight gags, and verbal humor to deliver a relentless stream of jokes. The script is filled with clever wordplay and cultural references, ensuring that there is always something to laugh at. The humor extends beyond traditional punchlines, with background jokes and visual gags that demand repeat viewings to catch every hilarious detail.
The cast of "Airplane!" is a comedic powerhouse, featuring talented actors who fully commit to the film's comedic style. Leslie Nielsen delivers a standout performance as Dr. Rumack, expertly delivering deadpan lines that have become legendary.
The film also features memorable appearances by Peter Graves as Captain Clarence Oveur, Lloyd Bridges as Steve McCroskey, and Robert Stack as Captain Rex Kramer, among others. Each actor brings their own comedic flair to their roles, contributing to the film's comedic brilliance.
Beyond its humor, "Airplane!" is also praised for its clever parody of the disaster movie genre. The film satirizes the conventions and tropes of disaster films, including exaggerated dramatic performances, over-the-top action sequences, and intricate plotlines. By juxtaposing these elements with absurd comedy, "Airplane!" creates a unique and refreshing take on the genre.
"Airplane!" remains a cultural touchstone for its impact on the comedy genre. Its influence can be seen in subsequent parody films and television shows that have adopted a similar style of humor. The film's success paved the way for the comedic careers of many of its actors, solidifying their status as comedic legends.
"Airplane!" is a comedic masterpiece that continues to entertain audiences decades after its release. With its rapid-fire jokes, clever spoofs, and memorable performances, the film has secured its place in the Comedy Hall of Fame. Still one of funniest spoof movies ever made, Airplane is one of the first and one of the best around.Hot Shots, Loaded Weapon even Naked Gun have tried to follow in its footsteps, but they have failed to hit the mark. That's not to say that they are bad movies, just that its difficult to follow a movie of this calibre.
Spoof movies definitely have there place in everyone's collection, but this is probably the best you'll ever see in the genre, if you have never seen it and you fancy a laugh, I can't recommend a better film, even though it has dated; it's still hilarious 9/10
